Are They Biologists or Bigots?

“So you’re one of those people.” You had a gleam in your eye like a college professor challenging a September freshman.

“Certified religious wacko,” I said.

“And that’s why you don’t believe in evolution?”

“Most Americans don’t believe. You think most Americans are religious wackos?”

The corners of your mouth revealed a slight smile. “Lots of Americans are nuts.”

We were at that salad place piling our plates with greens and beans and crunchy croutons. When we finished building our salads, we paid the cashier and made our way to a table in a shady corner of the outdoor patio.

“It has nothing to do with my religious faith,” I said. “I don’t have a problem with theistic evolution …”

“Well then what’s the issue?” You cut me off.
